Corporal John McNeill, was born in 1897 in Gargunnock, one of 4 sons of Dugald and Jessie McNeill of the The Gardens, Gargunnock. John was a bank apprentice and was 18 when he enlisted in Feb 1916.
John was serving with 11th Battalion The Royal Scots, when he was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium, on the 12 October 1917, aged 20. He is buried in the military cemetery at Poelcappell, 10km north east of Belgium.
John is remembered on a gravestone in Gargunnock Churchyard along with his parents and brothers.
The stone reads “In loving memory of our dear parents DUGALD McNEILL died 4th Dec 1923 aged 74 after 40 years service with the Stirlings of Gargunnock and JANET McPHEE died 25th Feb 1919 aged 65. Also our dear brothers JOHN McNEILL CPL Rpyal Scots killed in France 12th Oct 1917 aged 20. DUNCAN McNEILL died 4th June 1955 aged 67 beloved husband of CHRISTINA SOLIE who died 29th Aug 1967 aged 80. DUNCAN McNEILL for 41 years served with the Stirlings of Gargunnock.”
