The Gargunnock Festival
Friday 12th and Sunday 21st May 2006
What better way to celebrate Gargunnock’s strong musical traditions than in a Music Festival?
Gargunnock’s first such Festival will take place between Friday 12th and Sunday 21st May 2006 and will include not just music to suit all tastes, but art, photography and poetry too. A Jazz Night kicks things off on Friday 12th May. Singers Hamish Whiteford, Marion Wyllie, Catherine Tabberner (acclaimed mezzo soprano and leader of West Midlands singers - Belle Voci), will also perform as will two of the best acoustic bands on Edinburgh’s flourishing live music circuit - Flowers for Algernon and Circus.
If less formal music making is more your scene – come and take in the Folk Night or Sing-Along in the pub, pause outside the shop and enjoy the buskers, or visit Gargunnock’s Community Tearoom to partake of delicious home baking to the gentle strains of a sonata or a serenade.
There will also be opportunities to join in – whether as a busker, a tearoom musician or a performer in Maitland’s All Star Variety Show. And if you’ve always wanted to learn a musical instrument, but didn’t know where to start, you might also be interested in the ‘Come and Try’ workshop.
The village also has a strong tradition of poetry. Poets from the village, who represented Stirlingshire in a national WRI competition in Fochabers last year, will join other local poets in launching a specially created poetry book for the event.
Local children will show off their talents in their own concert and will also have the chance to take part in a music workshop.
The event aims to involve as wide a cross section of the village as possible in raising funds to start the refurbishment programme for the Gargunnock Community Centre.
