Our Gala BBQ was held in the gardens of the Community Centre this year on a warm summer evening. There was a great turnout from all areas of the village and everyone enjoyed the drinks, food and side entertainment.
For the younger at heart there was a bouncy castle and a new event, sumo wrestling (both generously sponsored by AEL Enterprises Ltd), Maitland also staged a rematch of the inter street tug o war. A close final ended up with Leckie Road overcoming Millbrae. Earlier in the evening the annual netball and football competitions took place at the school. The netball competition was decided on the night, the winning team comprised Rhona Hendry, Nicky Lamond, Emily Anderson, Grace Gill, Sam Christie, Siobhan O'Hare.
After a long dry and warm spell it was disappointing to see rain on Saturday morning but by lunchtime the rain had cleared and we enjoyed a dry, warm afternoon.
Our fancy dress parade left the school just after 1.30 and was led by local piper, Gordon Haggarty, following him was our Queen, Lisa Letford and Laird, William Jamieson, transported to the park in a fantastic stretch limousine kindly provided by Charles Carmichael, CCL Limousines.
The fancy dress parade was outstanding this year and the judges, Douglas and Moira Couplethwaite, had an extremely difficult task to choose the winners.

The prizes having been awarded the children refuelled with their goody bags and Asher’s ice cream before trying out some of the other attractions. There were the usual side stalls, hook the duck, beat the goalie, face painting amongst others. The superb Gala tea room was held in the marquee this year as the Pavilion is in such as state of disrepair and the location and food were greatly complimented.
There were no traditional races this year as the children have only recently competed in the school sports day but instead we had several new events and it was good to see an increase in the participation. The space hoppers proved to be great fun, the welly boot throwing eventful and the haggis hurling competition very entertaining. Ross Milne eventually emerged as the first ever winner of the Berits and Brown Haggis Hurling trophy.
At the top of the field Angela from Sports Development brought along foam javelins and other equipment and when she had completed her events the football final took place. The winners of this competition were William Jamieson, Lee Lamond, Darren Petrie, Thomas Cumming and Mark Parry.
Our first “best dressed street” competition was won by Charles Street and we are grateful to everyone who decorated their house and contributed to making the village look so festive.
The Guess the Teddy’s Name was won by Moira Coupethwaite, the bear’s name was Douglas.
Other prizes awarded were for the children’s poster competitions, the winners this year were
P1 Katie Scott, P2 Chloe Bruce, P3 Ruaraidh Scott, P4 Callum Farquhar, P5 Andrew Fitches, P6 Emily Anderson, P7 Douglas Boyd.
The day finished all too soon with the draw for our superb raffle, we are grateful to the many local people and businesses who contributed prizes and to all who bought tickets.
Our Gala would not happen without the help of people in the village. A big thank you to everyone who contributed in any way, however small, your efforts are greatly appreciated.
